Every four years, the International Basketball Federation puts on an international basketball tournament known as the FIBA World Championship. While the Olympic Games are perceived to be the proving ground for international basketball in the United States, the rest of the world views the FIBA tournament as the game’s most prestigious tournament. Though Americans haven’t always placed great importance on winning the World Championship, basketball purists have found it quite embarrassing that we haven’t won it since 1994.
Enter Jerry Colangelo, Krzyzewski and the 2008 Olympic Redeem Team.Spearheaded by the vision of Colangelo to restore pride in American basketball, the 2008 group not only completed the task of bringing the gold back home, but also inspiring younger players to want to wear the USA colors at some point in their career. That inspiration has paid off, as the 2010 United States National Team is now one game away from winning the FIBA World Championship.
However, let’s flash back to that group in 1994. Certainly not as star studded as the ’92 Dream Team, this group was put together more like the teams of today are. You had stars (Shaquille O’Neal, Dominique Wilkins, Reggie Miller), role players (Dan Majerle, Steve Smith, Mark Price) and vocal veteran leaders (Joe Dumars, Isiah Thomas). Led by O’Neal’s 18 points and 9 rebounds, the 1994 team went an impressive 8-0, winning their games by an average margin of 38 points. In anticipation for tomorrow’s final, we want to take a look back and salute that ’94 team the only way we know how – through sneakers. What was on the feet individuals? Take a look below.
Derrick Coleman – British Knights
Joe Dumars – adidas Agressor
Kevin Johnson – Converse Run N Slam II
Larry Johnson – Converse Destroyer Mid
