We're in the midst of an early 90s revival that stretches far beyond a core number of affectionados fixating on footwear at a creative and aesthetic peak. It's all about gold chains, hightops and neon! Irony, irony and more irony. And were we to transplant these gaudily dressed characters to the period in question via DeLorean/Flux Capcitor, they'd looks as in place as a stag night participant with an open shirt and afro wig would outside the Ce'st La Vie in 1978. We guess XL Champions and baggy faded denim probably don't have the same dayglo impact. But big shoes seem to be playing their part. Hence the off-topic rant.
Bar differences in the predictable throwback print, as well as Dunks and Jordans, there's parallels with the (overrated?) Air Assault - the one that returned with a midsole that bore a faint resemblance to that other botched resurrection - the Revolution. But in fairness, we were feeling the modifications, particularly for the low-cut variation.
But the Fat Boys' favourite seems to be the perfect fodder for big sneaker rockers, and this ankle high version of last year's bestselling P-Rod sequel expands on the quilted decadence of the source material - appropriate for something so bulky and in-your-face. All the technical elements remain, and the slanted embroidered Nike font and ribbed mesh panel complement the 818 emboss on the rear midsole.
Larger than life, it's still interesting to see reworkings of a contemporary model (in this case to make it look like an older shoe!) as with the Hiroshi, Tinker and Free variations instead of sticking to a tried-and-tested roster of tricked-out basketball classics. For those that can pull it off, the P-Rod 2 High is a fair choice. In fact, the extra height seems to level out the width and padding making it aesthetically pleasing in our eyes - it's comfortable for day-to-day wear, if that translates to performance, or whether the Stanley Knife and gaffer tape for a cut-down Caballero-style modification would be necessary remains to be seen. Interesting.
