AJ XXII

Jordan 22's were inspired by two things : Stealth US airplane and Christian DIOR high heels fashion shoes... The stealth has been designed to not reflect radars... So our design got more flowing lines... More angular lines... Christian dior high heel fashion shoes have some unique details... So we've tried to combine angular edgy military lines with the DIOR high fashion details... I think it's kind of a unique design...

AJ III

MJ III – STORIES
The MJ III was a really tricky and difficult project. We only had three weeks to design the sneakers, and for me it was the first time to get a chance to meet Michael.
My first meeting was when I went to visit him in his house, he was playing table tennis against Charles OAKLEY, both of them were incredibly noisy, trash talking each other... Charles was playing very aggressively... I was really impressed by these two huge athletes, sweating and arguing so much… They were close to fight each other for each point… It was impressive.
My second meeting was in Portland : that's the meeting where we decided to choose the elephant skin luxury leather... And then two and half weeks later MJ was in the process to leave NIKE...
So the third meeting was the one I was supposed to show him the first sample of the shoes, which was a real nightmare to do it on time - so many back and forth in China to finally get it… Phil KNIGHT, MJ parents, me and a couple of other NIKE staff were there but not Michael... Nobody knew where he was - actually he was negotiating to leave NIKE for ADIDAS. After waiting for 4 hours, MJ finally came back, he was in a bad mood... Everybody was quiet tense, the future of NIKE was in the balance... I started to present the shoes to him... I started to remind him of the process we had gone though to create these shoes, how much we talked about his life, his tastes etc… He was still in the bad mood... BUT sneakers have some special power, cause when I showed him the shoes, I remember how his face has changed, I remember exactly his face and his reaction when he saw the sample... Then I showed him some drawings... He started getting more interested... Actually that's the power of a good design, the power of shoes and sneakers... He cramped a little smile... This shoes did not look like anything he'd seen before, this was really up to his personality and his soul... He picked it up and looked at it carefully... Within fifteen minutes he was ready to leave and then he was laughing, talking about staying with NIKE... It was a very special day... it affected a lot of people at the end... Phil said that I've saved NIKE... and to be honest I was thinking that too… But when I was working on the MJ XX with Mark, I finally got the true story of MJ non-departure, actually right after the meeting he went on the car park with his dad, and his dad grabbed him and told him “don't do this to me ever again, don't you ever make me wait for 4 hours, without telling me where u are!!! It's unrespectfull for your family and the people who are working hard for you…“ Then he continues and tells him “Don't do it, don't leave NIKE, money is not a guarantee, these people are doing a good work, you don't know what could happen if you leave, nothing is guaranteed over there“… I'm sure my design helped to make Michael stay with NIKE, but for sure his dad saved NIKE more than me !

JUMPMAN LOGO

Jumpman was designed by a gentleman Peter MOORE... Creative director of ADIDAS right now but former designer for NIKE in the past... He “helped“ me with the project... But he was also one of the people to drive MJ to ADIDAS...It's funny cause he designed the JUMPMAN logo, but he was also a kind of undercover agent for ADIDAS who tried to make the JORDAN project fail. So after he finished the logos he left our company. But he underestimated the power of his logo... The sketches were ugly but the spirit was there... He was fully thinking we were going to fail, he was wrong...
I didn't hold any grudges at the time... I decided to put the jumpman instead of AIR JORDAN CLASSIC logo... I really wished to take off the swoosh... Many at NIKE argumented against that idea... So we hatched a plan with Michael... Hide progressively the NIKE logo... We've made it slowly disappear… It's proven now to be a good idea... And permited to create a new brand...

HOT STUFF

The next big concept for NIKE sneakers will be really more and more hi-tech shoes with an environmental orientation. Technology and environment are the two keywords for the future NIKE designs.
I'm also working on the new Lance AMSTRONG line, we called it “10-2“, date they found out about Lance's cancer, with Mark SMITH.
I'm also working on new corporate logo for NIKE INC, and other corporate brands such as HURLEY and CONVERSE, actually I'm designing a new baskeball shoe for CONVERSE...

WHEN SPORT SHOES BECAME STREET LEGENDS

I'm an ex-athlete... My first desire is to help athletes perform better... So in my design the performance reasons came first... But I'm also an architect... And then you have to thing about something else... Add something else, to make sure design and architecture work... So I always try to add more than a simple sport design. It makes u feel spiritual... Even from the very beginning i did bring romantic design to the process... I think about performance first, but I also think about the romance and the theatrical nature of your product...
It means that if your are in the first row when you are going to theatre, you can see everything on stage, any small detail... But the actors are not only acting for the first row... Someone on the stage has to act bigger than life for the back rows...
It's kind of the same process with sneakers design, upclose u can see the texture and all the details... But often times when u see a shoe is on tv, or on the streets and you are standing about 50 meters away... So we've to do shoes designed for the backrow as well...
We have to design the shoes twice, once for the first row and once for the backrow...

BATMAN SNEAKERS

I was contacted by Bob Ringwood, the Costume Designer of the first BATMAN movie... He was walking past a store front, and he saw a Nike AIR TRAINER that I had done... he thought who better than the person who designed that shoe to make the Batman shoes... He loved that shoe so much... So we tried to turn it into a boot... BATMAN was wearing sneakers.
That first movie was successful so he calls me again to do the second movie… The batman costume had prosthetic muscles, mold in curved surfaces... I remember what he was doing with the costumes to design the new BATMAN shoes... We calculated up to 20 000 us dollar to make the new batman boots... So we used old NIKE sketches to shorten down the process, and lower the price of fabrication…
After this second movie and our collaboration, Bob gave me a Batman Suit... Now I use it for the kids in my neighbourhood

很好的文章耶,原來jump man logo 是愛迪達去NIKE臥底的設計師設計的,呵呵,他覺得那個LOGO會毀了NIKE喔,沒想到是幫了NIKE,三代看來是AJ系列中很有歷史意義的一款鞋!感謝大大的資訊!
